On a personal level this makes a lot of sense to me. There's a lot of popular discussion out there about discipline being about good habits practiced consistently, and that rings true. Get in the seat early in the morning, make sure your desk is uncluttered and move forward. I do find that even a small step to getting started really starts to get the ball moving and gets your brain to be focused on the here and now and next steps rather than the past.

At a bigger picture level I'm always reminded of one of the best leaders I worked for in business years ago. We had a big PR project that went a bit sideways and caused some awkwardness in the market. The GM of our group was hyperfocused on figuring out we needed to do to course correct and move forward. Literally zero energy wasted on finger pointing to figure out who might have been sloppy and caused problems earlier in the project. There was a debrief and review a few days later to figure where the mistakes had been made but it was pause, detach and separate the past from present and move forward. That is hard to do in the moment but great when it happens!

This is a great example, Jim. That is why I always say that where you are is important only in relation to where you want to be. There is a time and place to figure how you got off track, but it is only after you get back on track.
