We all have to walk point on our own patrol, but it’s easier when you have a tribe behind you. Thanks for being a part of our tribe! -JAD
There is a story from the failed rescue mission to recover American hostages held in Tehran in 1979. I don’t know if it is true, but it is good.
At the desert airfield known as Desert One, a plane load of commandos sat waiting. One of their number had been asleep during the entire flight and still slept aboard the C-130 cargo aircraft.
When a helicopter was repositioning in the darkness to permit refueling of the C-130, it collided with the plane, its rotors slicing into the aircraft and igniting a fire which quickly spread.
The sleeping commando awoke with the collision, jumped up, ran to the back of the aircraft, and threw himself off the lowered ramp in a hard arch used in freefall parachute operations.
He fell several feet to the sand below, jumped up and ran clear of the burning aircraft.
Later when he was asked why he jumped out the way he did, he replied that because he had been asleep, he though the aircraft was still flying.
A teammate responded, “But you know you didn’t have a parachute on, right?”
His response was, “Hey man, one problem at a time.”
That’s pretty good advice.
Or as Marcus Aurelius said, “Concentrate every minute on doing what is in front of you…”
This year I started volunteering with the team at Project Recover. We are a non-profit dedicated to locating and recovering the remains of American MIAs.
Our biggest fundraising event of the year is the Mission-Miles event in September. The challenge is to register to run, ruck, hike, or walk 100 miles during the month while raising money for an incredible cause.

Great story. I’m going to do the 100 miles next month for Mission-Miles. I walk a ton on my treadmill while working so that should help.
